Moving with Pets: A Survival Guide

Moving is stressful for humans, but it can be terrifying for pets. The sudden change in environment and the presence of strangers can cause anxiety. Here is how to make the transition smoother for your four-legged family members.

Keep Routine Normal

Try to maintain your pet's feeding and walking schedule as much as possible. Stability is key. When looking for moving services, ask if they have experience working in homes with pets.

Create a Safe Space

On moving day, designate a quiet room for your pet with their bed, toys, and water. This keeps them out of the way of the movers and prevents them from bolting out the door. The best moving company crews will respect this boundary.

Update Tags and Chips

Before you move, ensure your pet's ID tags and microchip information are updated with your new address. This is especially crucial if you are using cheap long distance moving companies and traveling across provinces.

Travel Comfortably

If you are driving to your new home, make sure your pet is secured in a carrier or with a seatbelt harness. Never transport pets in the back of a moving truck.
